Chinese man executed after killing popular vlogger ex wife

A Chinese man has reportedly been executed for the murder of his ex-wife after he is said to have set her on fire while she was livestreaming.

The victim, known as Lamu, is reported to be popular social media personality on Douyin, China’s version of TikTok.

It’s understood Lamu’s channel attracted Hundreds of thousands of followers who had watched videos about her life in the mountains of Sichuan province.

According to repots the case is said to have opened the spotlight on violence against women in China, with one survey reportedly suggesting that a quarter of all Chinese women have suffered from domestic abuse.

 It’s understood that Lamu a mother-of-two, had reported her then husband’s violent behavior to local police, however those were said to have been dismissed as ‘a family matter’

When her husband Tang Lu was sentenced to death, the court in Aba prefecture, a remote rural area in the south-west of Sichuan province where a large number of ethnic Tibetans live, found that his crime had been “extremely cruel” and the social impact had been “extremely bad”. As per BBC

The couple is said to have divorced in June 2020 Lamu, with the court adding that her ex-spouse Tang Lu, had had a history of violence against her.

 Its reported that the incident occurred roughly three months following their separation, where Tan Lu is said to have doused her with petrol at her father’s home before set her alight.

 She suffered burns to 90% of her body, succumbing to her injuries two weeks later.

The case is said have sparked nation-wide outrage and has prompted renewed debate about violence against women the country.

It’s reported that thousands of Lamu’s followers left messages on her Douyin page, while millions of users of the microblogging platform Weibo called for justice using hashtags that were later censored.
