The ISSA/Boys Girl Championships is in all likelihood set for a return in March, following a meeting between the Inter-secondary School Sports Association (ISSA) and other local track and field stakeholders over the weekend.
The annual powerhouse Jamaica track and field competition, along with several other meets, was not held this year, as the island struggled to come to grips with the spread of the COVID-19 virus.
Following the release of the Jamaica Athletics Administrative Association (JAAA) track and field schedule last month the competition was tentatively slated to occupy it usual slot next season, and baring no unforeseeable disasters it seems that will remain the case.

“We have decided that having weighed all the options we will go ahead with our March date as planned but as a contingency, we have another date on the first of May. In case things get bad and we are unable to stage Champs at the end of March we would revert to that first week of May,” ISSA president Keith Wellington explained.

With the island still in the clutch of the global pandemic, however, there will also be several changes made to the structure and format of the event. The changes will affect the number of athletes competing and qualification for events.
“What we have decided for the short sprints is that we will have only 32 persons competing. For the hurdles and 800 we will have 24, while for the 1500, steeplechase, 3000, 5000, 15 or 16, and for the field events 12 persons,” he added.
