2014 Commonwealth 100m Champion Kemar Bailey-Cole, kick started his journey to reclaim that honor, with a victorious start in Birmingham, following his win in the sprint on Wednesday to advance to the semi-final round.
Bailey-Cole clocked an easy 10.15 seconds to grab the runner-up spot behind Nigeria’s Raymond Ekevwo-10.14 to advance as an automatic qualifier from heat 4. The two-time Olympic relay gold medalist has not been in his best form this season but seems to be rounding into his own and could spring a surprise or two as the games go along.
Conroy Jones who was running from Heat 8 advanced as the top qualifier from his race winning in 10.28 seconds to ensure Jamaica will have multiple representatives in next round. That however is where the celebrations would end in the men’s sprints as Nigel Clarke missed out on the semifinal spot after posting 10.41 for third.
The semifinals and finals will be run on Wednesday.
Jamaica also had a qualifier in the longer distance as National champion Natoyah Goule advanced to the finals of the women’s 800m.
Goule who was a finalist at the recent World Championships in Oregon will enter as medal favorite after clocking the fastest time of 1:58.39 seconds. That final is set to run on Saturday.
