The Weeknd seems to be making good on his plans to drop his iconic moniker after his social media names were changed to his birth name on Monday.
The Canadian-born singer, whose real name is Abel Tesfaye, had hinted at a shedding of the persona as a sign of growth during a recent interview with W Magazine.
“I’m going through a cathartic path right now,” he said, “I’m It’s getting to a place and a time where I’m getting ready to close the Weeknd chapter. I’ll still make music, maybe as Abel, maybe as The Weeknd.”
He continued, “But I still want to kill The Weeknd and I will. Eventually. I’m definitely trying to shed that skin and be reborn.”
The Starboy hitmaker previously shared that his name (Weeknd), came after he dropped out of school and took his mattress “leaving one weekend and never coming home”, the Daily Mail reported.
Tesfaye may have changed his name on the social media platform, but his handle on IG noticeably remains the same.

After 12 years of performing as the emotionally relatable persona, the Toronto native added, “As the Weeknd, I’ve said everything I can say.”
He continued, stating that his next album might be “last hurrah” under the name.
Abel’s upcoming album is said to be the conclusion to the trilogy he started with his 2020 album ‘After Hours’.
