Jamaica’s trio of Stephenie-Ann McPherson, Roneisha McGregor and Candice McLeod progressed to the women’s 400m semi-finals, following contrasting performances in their respective heats at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games a short while ago.
McGregor, running from lane two in heat three, was steady and measured for most of the way. She came off the curve slightly in front and came under pressure in the closing stages, but stayed on well for second in 51.14s.
American veteran Allyson Felix was comfortable in victory in 50.84s.
McLeod was much more relaxed running from lane five in heat four, as she recovered well from a slow start to sweep by the field and come into the straight with a clear and comfortable lead. She stopped the clock in 51.09s.
And national champion McPherson, running from lane three in heat five, was steady from the off but had to accelerate on the backstretch to make up the stagger and then pulled in the straight, easing across the line in 50.89s.
