The Ministry of Health and Wellness is to pump $125 million into the Western Children and Adolescent Hospital during the 2021/2022 fiscal year.

Prime Minister, Andrew Holness; and Minister of Health and Wellness, Dr Christopher Tufton, broke ground for the construction of the US$43-million Western Children and Adolescent Hospital on the compound of the Cornwall Regional Hospital on October 23, 2019.

The facility will be a 220-bed, seven-floor complex and a 60-room resident facility for health professionals from western Jamaica.

The Children and Adolescent Hospital will be the first of its kind in the English-speaking Caribbean, offering specialist medical care for children and young people up to age 18 years.

The project is being funded by both the Government of Jamaica and the Government of the People’s Republic of China.

Anticipated targets of the project up to 2022 includes commencing and completing phase-two parking, completing upgrade of a sewerage treatment system and commencing the construction of the hospital.

Physical achievements of the project up to December 2020 included completing the Government of Jamaica’s site preliminary activities (site clearance, access to road, utility relocation and reconnection and security services) and completing phase-one parking facilities
