Manchester City striker Erling Haaland cemented his name into Premier League history books after breaking the scoring record following City’s 4-1 win over Arsenal at the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday.
Haaland, who has been the league’s top marksman since his arrival last summer, scored his 33rd goal of the season to break Mo Salah’s record for most goals scored in a 38-game season.
The previous record of 32 goals was set by the Liverpool striker during the 2017/18 campaign.
The feat is the latest record by the 22-year-old in his already decorated debut season in England.
The Norwegian has already broken City’s club record for most goals in a single season as well as becoming the all-time leader in goals scored in all competitions by a player from the Premier League.
Andrew Cole and Alan Shearer currently share the record across the entire Premier League era, scoring 34 in 1993/94 and 1994/95 seasons respectively during a period that comprised 42 matches.
Although the premiership has since been restructured, that record also seems to be on a timer. With seven games left to play, the possibility of the league’s first 40-goal season appears to be imminent.
In addition to leading the Golden Boot race in the Premier League, Haaland also leads scoring in the Champions League with 11 strikes. A lead that could extend when they play Champions Real Madrid in their semi-final first leg on May 9.
