King of Reggae Bob Marley continues to leave an uplifting legacy on the world as one of his songs was listed among the top 10 happiest according to research by a UK music psychologist and university professor.
Dr Michael Bonshor, a music psychologist and university professor at the University of Sheffield has listed Marley’s ‘Sun Is Shining’ among the top happiest songs made, The Science Times reports.
According to Science Times, Dr Bonshor has invested considerable research into the “influence of research on well-being” and claims to have identified all the components that create a great “happy” song.
The formula used by Dr Bonshor to identify the most uplifting tunes includes components of a 137 beats per minute (bpm) pace and a typical verse-chorus-verse-chorus structure.
However, the use of key shifts or seventh chords creates that noticeable dynamic sound and feel to the track the University shared in a statement as per the Science times.
“We like ‘7th chords’ as they add interest; regular chords use three notes, whereas ‘7th chords’ add an extra note which provides a sense of musical ‘tension’ and ‘relief.”
“Alongside this, cheery songs usually have a strong 1-2-1-2 beat to them, so that you can dance along – and a short introduction means the song kicks off with a bang straight away, and there’s not a long build-up,” Dr. Bonshor continues.
In consideration of these factors, the Bob Marley classic stood among the top songs globally across genres that best checked all those boxes.
The single was placed at number six on the curated list of the top 10 happiest songs by Dr. Bonshor.
The track was part of his 1971 “Soul Revolution Part II” album.
Although initially not benefiting from the highlight of his other more known songs during his time, Sun is shining exploded in popularity after being remixed as a house track by Danish house producer Funkstar De Luxe in 1999.
