A Brazilian lawyer tragically died in a freak accident after his gun was discharged by an MRI machine’s magnetic field at a São Paulo hospital in Brazil.

The accident occurred while the lawyer identified as Leandro Mathias de Novaes was taking his mother for scans at the Laboratorio Cura in São Paulo local press reports.

According to reports, the staff had requested that the pair remove all metal objects before entering the MRI room, which was standard protocol at hospitals due to the device’s powerful magnetic field.

However, unbeknownst to hospital staff, Novaes had entered the room with his concealed weapon.

It’s understood that the magnetic field from the scanner pulled the lawyer’s gun from his waistband which subsequently went off, hitting him in the stomach.

While the incident itself occurred on January 16, he eventually succumbed to his injuries on February 6.

A spokesperson for Laboratorio Cura where the accident occurred said: “We would like to emphasize that all accident prevention protocols were followed by the Cura team, as is customary in all units.

The representative said that both Novaes and his mother signed a form acknowledging safety protocols, but the victim failed to mention his handgun and entered the unit with it “by his own decision.”

“Both the patient and his companion were properly instructed regarding the procedures for accessing the examination room and warned about the removal of any and all metallic objects.”

The New York Post reports that Novae’s passing has rocked the Sao Paulo law community.

“It is with deep regret that OAB Cotia communicates to all fellow lawyers the unexpected loss of our dear friend and lawyer Dr. Leandro Mathias de Novaes,” said a spokesperson for the Order of Attorneys of Brazil in Cotia in a statement.

“We are sorry for the loss and we sympathize with his family in this moment of pain.”
