A 22-year-old man was on Wednesday found guilty for the 2021 killing of his parents and sister during what police deemed was a staged robbery.
The accused, Alex Jackson, a resident of Iowa, was convicted of three counts of first-degree murder in the deaths of his 61-year-old father Jan, 68-year-old mother Melissa Jackson, and 19-year-old sister Sabrina Jackson after a jury deliberated for three hours.
Court documents revealed that on Tuesday, June 15, 2021, emergency respondents received a frantic call from the accused about a robbery at his home.
Jackson claimed that an African American male clad in a black, ski mask, gloves, and a green shoe, broke into his Cedar Rapids home and shot him and another family member.
He further noted that he struggled with the alleged robber and shot himself in the foot during the said struggle.
Evidence gathered from the scene proved that there was no intruder as only one pair of bloody footprints was found which matched the accuser.
Jan was shot five times, including twice in the back of the head. Melissa was shot in the right temple and left eye. His sister was shot in the rib cage and left eye.
All the victims were shot with a .22 caliber semi-automatic rifle.
Prosecutors also alluded that while some of the evidence presented was circumstantial, Alexander’s prints on the murder weapon and surveillance footage gathered from the scene showed no signs of an intruder.
In the interim, the accused will be sentenced on March 3.
