2018 World Cup Semifinalist Belgium gave a reminder of their footballing pedigree, after dismantling Poland 6-1 in their Group D fixture in the UEFA Nations League Tournament on Thursday.
The former World number 1 ranked team, who were embarrassed 4-1 by the Netherlands in their opening fixture, looked to be in for another rough evening, after going behind in the 28th minute courtesy of a Robert Lewandowsky strike.
However, with the sting of that thrashing still fresh in their minds, Belgium began to show more solid composure on the field.
Composure which paid off, when Axel Witsel’s brilliantly struck volley from outside the box levelled the scores just before the half on minute 42.
That momentum was carried over into the second half, as Captain Kevin De Bruyne netted his 24th international goal in the 59th minute, to open the floodgates for Belgium as they went on to score three goals inside ten minutes.
Leandro Trossard netted a brace in the 73rd and 80th minutes before Leander Dendoncker hammered in a ‘screamer’ from 30 yards out three minutes later to make it 5-1.
Second half substitute Lois Openda, marked his international debut with a stoppage time goal in the 94th minute to hammer down the final nail in the Poland coffin and condemn them to their second successive defeat in the tournament.
The result elevates the Belgians to second in the table with 3 points from two games, while Poland are second from bottom in the group with zero from two, only ahead of Wales who has an inferior goal average.
The Netherlands occupies the summit on maximum six points.
