Students from the University of the Commonwealth Caribbean (UCC) have staged a protest at the University’s main campus to urge administrators to lower tuition fees.
This comes after the University’s administrators outlined that a 23% increase will be implemented or a new per module fee of 37 thousand dollars.
This proposed fee will come into effect for Fall 2022 for undergraduate returning students who choose the hybrid modality.
However, the students indicated that the proposed rates are exorbitant and has asked the University to instead put forth a reasonable 10 percent increase.
“We cannot afford it; we simply cannot afford it and them being in the media saying that they’re doing everything while they’re actually not is ridiculous” a student lamented.
Another student however indicated that while he understands the need to increase miscellaneous fees to cover utility costs, students should not be bombarded with this burden when they take classes online.
“We’re going to school online and we pay our own utilities, so why should we be held accountable for a utility cost that we’re not going to school physically?” he lambasted
Meanwhile, the University stands resolute that the proposed increase will be geared towards offering the highest quality education to students.
The University also outlined that the move was also necessary for the maintenance of excellent teaching, learning and research standards, as well as further institutional development.
