Formula 1 racing legend Lewis Hamilton says he will be changing his name to honor his mother.

Hamilton, who’s the most decorated driver of all time with seven-word titles, stated he’s in the process of adding his mother’s maiden name to his surname.

Speaking at the 2022 Dubai Expo ahead of this weekend’s season opener in Bahrain, he shared, “I’m really proud of my family’s name, Hamilton,” he said. “None of you might know that my mum’s name is Larbalestier and I am just about to put that in my name.”

Hamilton’s mother, Carmen Larbalestier, now Lockhart, separated from his father Anthony Hamilton when the future F1 juggernaut was two years old.

As he chases a history-making feat of an eighth title, he believes her legacy should also be associated with every accomplishment.

“I don’t fully understand the idea that when people get married, the woman loses their name. I really want my mum to continue on with the Hamilton name,” he added.

While he is doubtful that the change will happen before next week’s season opener, remains optimistic that it will come through soon.

Many have applauded the move by the British racer, including notable F1 commentator David Croft.

Croft stated that “Lewis is so attached to his dad because of their background and the karting weekends, and the bond that came through racing, but he has also got a huge bond with his mum. He loves her to bits.”

“I think it’s brilliant that he’s going to take her name and well done, Lewis. He’s doing it for all the right reasons,” Croft continued.

“Obviously, his mum and dad have been separated for many, many years, but they both come to the same races. We see them both together and I think it’s fantastic what he’s doing,” he concluded.

Hamilton, who was controversially denied a record-breaking eighth world title on the final lap of the season last year, will definitely draw some additional motivation from the move.

He equaled Micheal Schumacher’s record of seven world driver’s titles in 2020.
