A 20-year-old Taiwanese man reportedly took his mother to court after failing to reconcile with her for throwing away his prized manga comic book collection without his consent.

According to reports, the 64-year-old woman from Chiayi City, Taiwan, discarded a valuable 32-volume “Attack of Titan” collection to the dismay of her son, which caused the two to be at loggerheads.

It’s understood that the two were living together at her home, where she had grown increasingly annoyed with her son’s continuously expanding comic collection, so when she stumbled over the collection, she became triggered to discard volumes to free up space.

The seemingly innocuous act would, however, lead to a major rift between the two as her 20-year-old son reportedly became livid at the discarding of his books without his knowledge.

Further reports said that the matter was shortly escalated to a police complaint against his mother before being taken to court for “destroying his personal property without his consent”.

The 20-year-old man argued the value of the tossed comics was extremely high based on the set’s rarity and considered a collector’s item.

He noted that “Attack on Titan” is a very popular manga, so finding another complete collection would be extremely challenging, considering that some of the 32 volumes are no longer in print.

In her defence, the mother argued that some of the manga volumes were damp and became clutter in the house, which justified her removing the material. Despite her remorse, it is understood that her son remains unwilling to reconcile

The Chiayi District Court fined the mother $ 5,000 Taiwanese dollars ($160) for property damage, a sentence that can be commuted to community service.

The court noted that her failure to respect her son’s property rights was inappropriate.
