Bahamian officials have indicated that 16 Haitian migrants were killed after a boat capsized off the coast of Bahamas this morning.

Reports from the Royal Bahamas Defense Force is that the boat capsized some 7 miles (11 kilometers) off the island of New Providence.

This tragedy comes amid a continuing wave of sea migration toward the US, including more than 150 having to be saved off Florida on Thursday.

In addition, dangerous sea voyages in rickety vessels have become increasingly common over the last year as Haitians flee poverty and rising gang violence.

Meanwhile, US agencies have deployed four boats to transfer the remaining migrants from the ruins. Furthermore, the Miami Fire Department transferred four people to Homestead Hospital for medical treatment.

A representative from the US Coast Guard has also outlined that the migrants will be repatriated to their country of origin.
